A Case for SEL by Robert Kim

A powerful article making the case for social and emotional learning, by Morningside board member Robert Kim.

It gives us great comfort that we have so many partners in our work to spread social and emotional learning.

Among them is our board member Robert Kim, who has written a powerful article, just published in Kappan, on “Making the Case for Social and Emotional Learning.” In it, Robert, a legal expert, describes how SEL is facing right-wing attacks – but flourishing anyway. SEL is flourishing because the evidence is so strong that it works.

And it is sorely needed. As Robert notes, "district spending on SEL programming — fueled by pandemic-era concerns about students’ mental health — increased by 45% from 2019-20 to 2020-21."

Robert writes that:

"SEL isn’t just good for students and their development. It’s also a tool to help schools foster equitable and nondiscriminatory school environments and, in the process, comply with civil rights laws."
