exploring the range of emotions header

In this workshop, we look closely at big, more intense emotions; how to navigate them ourselves; and how to support ourselves and those we care for. We spend time exploring a range of feelings, including anger, and working together on developing facility with several powerful and practical strategies for dealing with “big” emotions in ways that further connection and care. Each of these strategies can be proactively taught, practiced, modeled, and delivered without value judgments on the feelings themselves.

understanding the adolescent brain header

In this workshop, we learn about adolescent brain development, what this looks like in action, and ways for us to support and navigate through adolescence alongside the young people we support. Adolescents need and deserve adults that support their development and understand what they might not yet be able to. This looks like guidance, practice, time, space, repetition, support, permission to make mistakes, and collaborative corrective measures. We spend time growing our understanding of the neuroscience of the adolescent brain and developing a greater awareness of a developmentally supportive mindset to best support our young people.

intro to culturally affirming SEL header

In this workshop, participants explore and engage in activities around the Who, What, Where, When, and—most importantly—Why of culturally affirming SEL and how to integrate it into as well as take it beyond academic spaces. Participants have an opportunity to share their experience(s)/knowledge of SEL and then discuss cultural competency and knowledge holes that may exist in their current understandings.

Meeting the moment header

Exploring and discussing current events, big emotions, and arising conflicts is a growth opportunity for both adults and children, but it can be daunting and uncomfortable. As educators, we may hesitate or withdraw in fear of saying the “wrong” thing or needing space to first process our own thoughts and feelings on these critical, and sometimes tragic, events or issues. Talking with young people about the ongoing changes and conflicts in our world can be difficult and emotionally taxing but it's vital that we acknowledge, include and uplift youth voices. In this workshop, we provide and practice concrete strategies that afford us all the space and time to feel affirmed, validated, and courageous enough to be in conversation about the things in our lives weighing heavy on minds and hearts.

What People Are Saying...

Crisis Team Cohort participant

“As soon as I know the [MSC] invitation is coming in, I make sure my principal knows that I won't be in that day so that we can adjust our schedule and ensure that I can be out of the building for the day.”

Parent Coordinator

“You [Morningside] didn’t just lead a workshop, you created a sanctuary. A room where our parents didn’t just learn, they felt. They felt seen. They felt heard. They felt safe. In a world that often offers little space for their full stories, you made room. That is a gift beyond measure.”

Family/Caretaker Workshop participant

“I don't know how I found you but I'm so glad I did! I don't know how to use the computer but I'm so glad I tried because what you're sharing is so valuable. I'm a grandmother and I'm learning so much and you are just describing our children to a T. That visual and explanation of the brain and now what you're saying about the importance of giving time and space, thank you."
