A growing body of scientific evidence demonstrates the effectiveness of SEL programs. A recent article in Child Development reports on a meta-analysis of 213 school-based SEL programs (Durlak, et al, 2011). Compared to controls, SEL participants demonstrated significantly improved social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior, and an 11% gain in academic achievement.
Major scientific studies of Morningside Center's 4Rs and Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) have added to this evidence. In addition, the RCCP has been the subject of two other research evaluations:
CASEL Select Program
In 2005, after three years of surveying and analyzing the research on scores of programs through the country, the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) designated the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program as one of the nation’s 22 “Select Social-Emotional Programs” that are “especially effective and comprehensive in their social-emotional learning coverage, their documented impacts, and the staff development they provide.” CASEL is now in the process of updating its list of Select SEL Programs. In view of the findings and quality of the recently completed 4Rs study, we are confident that The 4Rs will soon join the RCCP on the list.
SAMHSA Excellence Award
In January 2005, Resolving Conflict Creatively was given an “Excellence Award” by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA has officially designated the RCCP as an “effective program” that is “well-implemented,” “well-evaluated,” and has shown a “consistent positive pattern of results.”
